This is just for fun.
No. It is just for fun.
The top 5 vote receivers will receive a ceremonial sash that they can wear for the duration of their term and keep as a souvenir of their years of service. There are no other rewards beyond wagging rights.
They will have no power. This is a ceremonial position that is just for fun. The thrill of being on Culver City Dog City Council is its own reward.
They will not have any responsibilities.
Candidates must meet the following requirements:
They must be a biological dog (Canis familiaris). Wolf and coyote hybrids are acceptable.
They must reside in Culver City permanently during their term of service.
Dogs that reside with current or former elected officials of Culver City -or candidates in the current election- are NOT eligible for office. (This exclusion exists to ensure that this election remains completely separate from actual political dynamics.)
Complete the Enter My Dog form to nominate your pup. You'll need to submit your name, Culver City address, email address, and a 500 character max candidate statement.
Send a photo (jpg, under 1GB) of your dog to culvercitydogcitycouncil@gmail.com with your dog's name in the subject line. Please ensure that no people are in the photo.
Only your dog's name, photo and candidate statement will be posted on the webpage and ballot: owner information will not be shared.
Your dog's candidate statement should tell the voters what makes them special and why they would be a great representative for Culver City. First person preferred!
The candidate statement must meet the following requirements:
500 characters or less
Not overtly offensive
Makes no reference (directly or indirectly) to any real individuals or businesses
Sincerity, humor, ridiculousness and/or facetiousness are all welcomed. Real politics are discouraged and may be returned for editing.
Owner information will not be shared in the Candidate Profiles.
Costumes are welcomed but are entirely at the discretion of the candidate.
Yes. Whatever your dog would like to use as their candidate name is completely fine.
In order to promote diversity, we must limit candidates to one entrant per household. We promise not to tell the dogs you didn't nominate.
Important exception! If you are nominating dogs that are looking for a forever home and in need of adoption, there is no limit! Please include adoption contact information in your candidate statement.
All human residents of Culver City who provide their Culver City address may vote.
Yes! There is no minimum or maximum age.
Could you ever look them in the eyes again if you didn't?!? Of course you can.
No, sorry. I'll be able to see who you voted for but I promise to keep your vote confidential. And also, who would care?
This is to limit voting within Culver City and prevent some savvy entrant from having their 2 million Instagram followers swamp the election and ruin it for everyone. I don't want or need your data and I will delete it after the votes are counted.
Beginning October 5, you'll be able to use the Vote Now button on the home page to cast your vote for up to 5 candidates.
Each Culver City resident may vote once, but you may vote for up to 5 candidates.
Yes, you absolutely can! Pawsitive campaigning only. This isn't a cat election. 😹
Yes! Just make sure you have permission and do not put it on any public property.
No. Any bad dog behavior will result in removal from the ballot. Good dogs (and good dog owners) only. Let's keep this fun for everyone.
To my knowledge, this will be the FIRST EVER DOG CITY COUNCIL! There is a dog Mayor of Idyllwild, CA, a non-human Mayor of Pioneertown, CA, and a few other honorary animal mayors across the United States. We'll be making history with this election!
This is a Dog City Council. Please feel free to create your own Culver City Cat City Council election. It appears that the domain catcitycouncil.org is available.
I'm just a Culver City resident (and wife of a former human councilmember) who wants to bring something fun, light-hearted and positive to the political season, with the added benefit of seeing cute dogs wearing sashes. I am funding it with my own money. My own dog is ineligible to run so you can be assured I will be committed to making it a free and fair election. I have no agenda aside from spreading joy.
